Winter Weather Takes a Toll on Homeless

Uncharacteristically mild winter temperatures have had many cheering, but for the homeless, even 40 degree temperatures take a toll.  With below freezing temperatures and snow in the forecast, living on the streets becomes a fight for basic survival.

For years, Volunteers of America outreach workers have been hitting the streets to meet the needs of Cleveland’s unsheltered homeless and each year as temperatures drop, this work becomes all the more important.

You can help by donating sleeping bags, blankets, non-perishable food and hygiene items to help continue to meet this critical need. The outreach team’s operation hub is our Cleveland Shelter at 2710 Walton Avenue which provides emergency shelter to 26 men each night throughout the year and an additional 30 beds during the winter.

Sleeping bags and blankets can be gently-used or new. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated.

“No one should have to spend the night on Cleveland’s streets in the snow and freezing cold,” said Dennis J. Kresak, Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio president and CEO. “We hope the community will join with us in our efforts to provide warm meals and beds for those in need.”

If you would like to make a donation, contact the shelter at (216) 621-0120 or donate online.
