Lucky Thrift Shopper Finds Picasso Print

5/1/12 - Regular Volunteers of America Thrift Store Shopper Zachary Bodish recently had a very lucky shopping day. On one of his regular trips, he picked up what seemed to be an original Picasso print in the Volunteers of America Thrift Store on Indianola Avenue in Columbus for just $14.14.

Home Depot® Brightens Landscape of Cincinnati Veteran Home

4/27/12 - Over 20 Home Depot® volunteers generously gave their time to landscape the Mount Healthy Veterans Resource Center. The project was a part of The Home Depot® Foundation's Celebration of Service initiative, which helps improve facilities where veterans live and receive services.

Under Construction: A Home for the Brave

2/17/12 - Construction is underway on a new home for struggling Cincinnati veterans. The $1.9 million Home for the Brave facility will provide transitional housing to 54 male and female homeless veterans as they work toward self-sufficiency through education, employment, substance abuse treatment and supportive case management.

Winter Weather Takes a Toll on Homeless

2/13/12 - Uncharacteristically mild winter temperatures have had many cheering, but for the homeless, even 40 degree temperatures take a toll. With below freezing temperatures and snow in the forecast, living on the streets becomes a fight for basic survival.

Home Depot® Pledges Funds for Homeless Vets

1/31/12 - In April 2011, The Home Depot® Foundation announced a pledge of $30 million over three years to address veterans’ housing issues. This includes a three-year partnership with Volunteers of America nationwide, including a $1.8 million commitment to repair and rehab properties where veterans and their families live. Locally, as a part of The Home Depot® Foundation’s Celebration of Service initiative, Volunteers of America has received nearly $30,000 in Home Depot® grants to support projects at our veterans housing and employment programs in Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton. Construction Kicks Off on Veterans Program

6/10/11 - On Friday, June 10, we celebrated the beginning of construction at our Harmon Avenue Veterans Transitional Housing Program in Columbus with a groundbreaking ceremony. Special guests included U.S. Congressman Steve Stivers and former resident Gary Kubicki. The $1.3 million project will include renovations to the kitchen, bathrooms, common and living areas as well as an expansion allowing the Employment Resource Center, currently located at 567 W. Broad Street, to move onsite. The final product will result in more privacy for residents and improved access to employment support resources.

A New Home for Vets - Wade Park Domiciliary

5/16/11 - Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio, in partnership with the Louis Stokes, Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, welcomed over 200 guests to the dedication ceremony of the Veterans Domiciliary at Wade Park in Cleveland. The 122-bed homeless program will provide supportive case management and clinical services to male and female veterans in need. Read more by clicking on the article link.

St. Bernard Commons Construction to Begin in March

1/24/11 - St. Bernard Commons, a senior housing community is on track to begin construction in March. The facility will provide safe, affordable, long-term housing to seniors over the age of 62.

Helping Homeless Youth Succeed in School

1/10/11 - The Volunteers of America Youth Education Program provides a stable afterschool and summer learning environment for homeless children. Columbus' NBC4 stopped by to see the program first hand and talk to staff and parents about the positive impact on the children.

Final Auto Auction of 2010 Draws a Crowd

12/30/10 - The last auto auction of 2010 drew a crowd despite cold, wet weather. News teams attended the auction to get an inside look. Vehicles donated to Volunteers of America are auctioned off at weekly auctions. All the proceeds benefit our programs and services. Donors are eligible for a tax deduction.

12/7/10 - As snow continues to fall in Cleveland, our Walton Avenue Shelter doubles its capacity to provide warm meals and beds to those who need emergency shelter.

11/23/10 - On Thanksgiving Day Volunteers of America staff, volunteers and the Cleveland Police Department Second District Precinct prepared meals for homeless men at our Walton Avenue shelter and also delivered meals to the elderly and homebound.

Thanksgiving Care-A-Van 2010

11/15/10 - Volunteers of America is gearing up for the 20th annual Thanksgiving Care-A-Van event. Turkey dinner for 2,500 will be prepared and delivered to those in need on Thanksgiving Day througout Central Ohio. The program is made possible by over 200 volunteers, Aramark, The Kroger Co., Honeysuckle White More to Share program, the Greater Columbus Convention Center and Heartland Bread and Roll.

Central Ohio Stand Down 2010

10/28/10 - The Central Ohio Stand Down was held on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Homeless veterans were offerred free health care, haircuts, clothing and more.

National Suit Drive

10/28/10 - During the month of September all suits collected at Central Ohio Men's Wearhouse locations were donated to Volunteers of America's career clothing closet for homeless veterans who are working and job searching.

Renovations to Veteran Facility to Help Meet Needs of Homeless Vets

2/23/11 - A $1.3 million renovation and expansion will take place next month at Volunteers of America's Columbus Veterans Transitional Housing Program. The improvements come at the same time as a recently released Federal HUD and VA report shows veterans are twice as likely to be homeless as other adults. The project will allow Volunteers of America to offer even more resources to local homeless veteran heroes.
